William 1 1776-1842

At present, I know nothing about William, except that he was a bricklayer by trade. However, certainly by 1826, if not well before, he had founded Wm Tomkinson and Sons.

He and John had arrived, with their father Charles, in Liverpool in or before 1801. Location to be determined. In 1816 they were recorded in Gores at 7 Mill Place. William later moving to No 6.

He and Jane Calland married in 1801 at St Anne's Liverpool and they continued to live in the City.  Their children were Hannah (1802), Elizabeth May (1803), Sarah (1805), William (1806), Jane (1807) and Emma (1813). By 1813 they were living at 16 Brownlow Street ( now part of the University Precinct), where he died in 1842.

More research is required as I have no record of anything he did before 1837. By then of course he may have retired, but the record from then for ten years or so is in a very substantial ledger, which is being transcribed, and has quite a diverse collection of jobs, which must have been looked after by William 2. Example below.

The laying of the foundation stone for the opening
of Birkenhead Docks 1845

Hale Church after a complete rebuild following an arson attack. c 1979

Construction of the Plough Inn Runcorn c 1980
