John was not only a quarryman and mason, but was certainly a very significant contractor in Liverpool and the North-West from 1826 till 1848.
However, he had many other interests: a family, several quarries, a deep religious belief which manifested itself in significant generosity to several communities, lime kilns to make mortar and a willingness to take risks so as to make money.
